24 hour emergency electrician in Sydney
Power gone, a breaker that will not reset, or something that smells like it is burning. Call us and speak to a licensed electrician, not an answering service.
Turn the power off first
If you can smell burning, see scorch marks around a socket, or anyone has received a shock, switch off the main switch at your switchboard before you do anything else. If there is smoke or fire, call 000. Do not open a switchboard or pull apart a fitting yourself — under NSW law that work is restricted to licensed electricians, and the risk is not worth it.
If the power is out across your whole street, it is a network fault rather than an electrical one. Ausgrid handles that on 13 13 88.
What we get called out for
- Complete loss of power to a property when neighbours still have supply
- Safety switches that trip immediately every time you reset them
- Burning smells, buzzing, or heat coming from a switchboard or power point
- Scorched or discoloured outlets and light fittings
- Water damage to wiring after a leak or storm
- Hot water or oven circuits that have dropped out
- Shocks or tingles from taps, appliances or metal fittings
How the callout works
You call and describe what is happening. We tell you over the phone whether it is something you can safely wait on until morning or whether it needs attention now, and we will say so honestly — a callout you do not need is not a job we want.
On arrival we isolate the fault, make the installation safe, and explain what has failed and what it will cost to repair. Where we can complete the repair on the spot we do. Where a part needs ordering, we leave the property safe and functional on the circuits we can restore.
A recent callout in Blakehurst
A Blakehurst homeowner called us at 7pm with water running out of their switchboard. We were on site within fifteen minutes and made the board safe before anything failed. The source turned out to be a conduit in the garden bed that had never been capped off, so water was tracking back along the cable into the board. We dug it up, made it good, and had the property safe that night. Four hours, start to finish.
Common questions
My safety switch keeps tripping. What causes that?
Most often a single faulty appliance leaking current to earth. Unplug everything on that circuit, reset, then plug items back one at a time until it trips again. Water in an outdoor socket or light fitting does the same thing, which is why it often starts after rain. If the switch will not reset with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and needs a licensed electrician.
The power is out. Is it my problem or the network's?
Look at your neighbours. If the whole street is dark it is a network fault and Ausgrid handles it on 13 13 88. If only your property is out, check whether the main switch has tripped. If it will not stay on, that is an electrical fault at the property and it needs attention.
Can I just replace a light fitting or power point myself?
No. In NSW electrical installation work must be carried out by a licensed electrician, and that includes swapping a power point or hardwiring a light fitting. Plugging in a lamp is fine. Anything behind the wall plate is not, and doing it yourself can void your insurance as well as being illegal.
