Replacing halogen downlights
Most homes around here still have at least some halogen downlights, and they are worth changing for reasons beyond the power bill. A halogen fitting runs hot enough to be a genuine fire risk where insulation has been pushed up against it, which happens constantly in roof spaces that have been re-insulated since the lights went in.
LED fittings run cool, draw a fraction of the power and last years longer. The swap is usually straightforward, though older installations sometimes have transformers that need removing rather than reusing.
A recent job in Oatley
A client on Frederick Street wanted a new ceiling fan and the downlights replaced throughout the house. We swapped 49 fittings for new LEDs and installed the fan. Two days on site.
When a new switch cable cannot be run
Concrete and brick homes often have no practical route for a new switch cable, and that is the usual reason people are told a lighting idea cannot be done.
A client on Stuart Street in Blakehurst wanted LED strip lighting in their kitchen in exactly that situation. We installed the strip and paired it to a wireless switch fitted over the existing one, so it looks like the original switch and runs the strip from the same place.
Planning the layout
How many downlights a room needs depends on the ceiling height, the colour of the walls and what the room is used for, and it is far easier to get right before the ceiling is closed up. If you are renovating, it is worth having the lighting layout worked out at the same time as the cabinetry rather than after it.
